| Tidal Waves and Tsunamis |
| |
|
Rough house is physically located on the side of a cliff,
higher than scientists have estimated that a tidal wave or tsunami would reach
if the Christmas-time 2004 Indian Ocean events were to occur in the Pacific
Ocean. There is enough concern about such a low-probability event that the
federal government has tsunami warning systems in place for the entire US West
Coast. For the Sunset Beach area where we are, residents were evacuated for the
last tsunami--a wave just under four feet from the March 2011 Japan quake, one of the five largest
quakes in the last 100 years--even
though the tsunami did not reach our normal high tide line. The difference between
high and low tide is over ten feet, so a four-foot tsunami has to coincide with
high tide to even begin to reach structures. Our road is another twelve
feet above the high tide line, and our building floors are another ten or more
above that. Although you could stay inside and in all likelihood be safe, you
should follow any official instructions, obviously. You may want to drive your car
back to the top of the cliff, where Sunset Street joins with Highway 109 (where
you turned off), less than half a mile away. This is the high point in the area
and there are no studied tsunami or tidal wave conditions that could reach this
level. Take your camera, this is a great spot to watch waves, big and small. The
bottom line—don’t worry about it, you’ll be safe even under extremely unlikely
events. |
